Field Trip- Museum of Math

crow_ssauser : Field Trip, Summer Camp

SUMMER CAMP

If the mention of algebra or geometry puts your kids in power-save mode, they’re not associating math with laser beams, memory games, and riding a square-wheeled tricycle. That’s the beauty of MoMath: 19,000 square feet of interactive, often awe-inspiring exhibits driven by—you guessed it—mathematical concepts. The 30-plus stations let kids design 3-D images in a Colosseum-inspired computer studio, scatter across a digital floor that lights the shortest distance between each person, and glide a Plexiglas cart over acorn-shaped rubber balls (matching diameters make for a surprisingly smooth ride). Consider the toppled-over ticket machine a hint to check all preconceptions at the door. read more »

How to teach your child the love of reading

crow_ssauser : Afterschool, Reading

Many parents have told us that their children don’t like to read and sure enough those are the students who have low grades in subjects that involve reading, for example language arts, social studies and science. These are bright children but they just don’t like to read. Why is that and who needs to step up and encourage these children to read? Is it the teachers’ job, or is it the parent’s job? Regardless of the reason, parents have a bigger role in this much-needed intervention. It is the parents’ job to find books that their kids enjoy, and get their kids to read them.

What to ask at the Parent – Teachers conference.

Mochi Zaho : Parent / Teacher

Communication with your child on a regular basis and at the end of each school day is an important element in your child’s education.   Unfortunately some parents are not involved as much as they should be.  Speaking with your child’s teacher at the beginning of the school year is the best time to open the discussion. Teachers usually post class requirements on the school website for example: homework, projects due, and test dates. Find out what the teacher’s expectations are for the year and what type of curriculum she has set for the students. Find out this information at the start of school and keep track of it throughout the year.  Keep track of what homework, and tests your child has coming up. Proactive parents’ children do considerably better at school.  Your child’s teacher can provide valuable insight into your child’s education. Stay in touch with the teacher throughout the school year, and be sure to ask  the following questions when you meet at the Parent-Teacher conference. Read More Below!
